A Beatiful Science Dream Came True On The 20th Anniversary!

Two news items make the bullish case for precious metal palladium stronger.

First, a 20 years old beautiful science dream is finally confirmed this week. The breaking news quickly spreads through the global Medias. Read it here, here, here and here. On the 20th anniversary of the initial Fleischmann-Pons announcement of the original Cold Fusion, and on the same University of Utah campus, scientists from the US Navy SPAWAR lab presented their experimental work that convincingly proved that Cold Fusion is real, at the annual American Chemical Society meetings.

This news brings renewed hope that we may finally have a virtually inexhaustible new energy source to replace the world's depleting fossil fuels, cut carbon emission (Secretary Steve Chu are you listening?), and overcome the world's looming Peak Oil energy crisis.

I have previously discussed the connection between Cold Fusion and palladium. Cold fusion relies on palladium as the metal has a unique property: its extreme affinity to hydrogen and deuterium helps the deuterium nucleus to get closer and fuse into helium, releasing lots of energy. I have followed cold fusion developments, and tracked the research of Pamela Mosier-Boss and colleagues at SPAWAR. I also mentioned the Arata public demo, the first successful public demo, in a previous Seeking Alpha article. Read the heated debates in the comments.

For the first time, the SPAWAR discovery is accepted as real, as no one, not even the skeptics would question the credibility of the experiments any more. The remaining controversy is in the interpretation of the observations. To any one who knows physics, it's conclusive that nuclear reaction must have happened, as neutrons and gamma rays are detected.

No wonder the news quickly spread through the global Medias in less than 24 hours! I can not emphasize enough how important this break through means to humanity's energy future! I immediately called my Congress representatives but found out that they have already noticed the story, and have printed copies sitting right on their desks!

How many investors immediately realize the connection between palladium and cold fusion, and are quick to seize one of the best investment opportunities in a generation?

How many politicians realize the EXTREME DANGER if the cold fusion technology falls into the wrong hands? It can be developed into a new energy source, or a new thermal nuclear bomb! The research can be done with a couple million dollars, the materials are readily available: palladium and heavy water. Such a horrible weapon can be easily smuggled in undetected. There is no radiation. No suspicion could be raised as the heavy water is perfectly drinkable and the palladium is merely a precious metal! A terrorist could also pull a "Cold Fusion Bomb" hoax and the threat must be treated as credible, as we have no way of discrediting such a hoax if we do not grasp the Cold Fusion technology ourselves!

I urge people to contact elected politicians and urge for support of the Cold Fusion research, not only to secure our energy future, but also to prevent this potentially dangerous technology from falling into the wrong hands!

Now back to palladium. One Russian news story makes the metal extremely bullish, in the immediate future. The news suggests that Norilsk Nickel (NILSY.PK), the world's largest nickel and palladium mine, may run out of cash and could be on the brink of shut down. A Norilsk Nickel shut down will have a huge impact on the global supply of nickel, palladium and platinum, as they supply 20% of the world's nickel, 45% of palladium and 12% of platinum. Their shut down could immediately send prices of all three metals flying in the ensuring panic of shortage, particularly palladium.

The latest news that Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin was inquiring about Norilsk's finances knocked the stock (NILSY.PK) down as much as 14%. Mr. Sechin demanded an explanation of the 86 billion rubles (US$2.6 billion) share buyback and other matters.

At the end of August, 08, Norilsk Nickel launched a controversial stock buyback program to buy back 7,947,000 shares at 6167 Roubles per share, or 49 billion Roubles (US$2B). The buyback proceeded even as some share holders fought against it in court, denouncing the program for depleting the company's cash reserve and push it to the brink of bankruptcy.

Then on March 11, 09, Norilsk announced that they are re-selling the buyback shares for a mere $355M, getting only 18 cents back on the dollar. It's absolutely hilarious! As commodities collapsed, companies are suspending dividends, issue new shares and do all they can to raise and preserve cash liquidity. But Norilsk Nickel threw cash away in a meaningless stock buyback, and then had to re-sell the shares for a fraction of the cash. WHY?

This story and the Russian Government investigation of Norilsk Nickel finances imply that they could be in a deep financial mess concealed to the public, and that they are desperate for cash, as their mining operation is losing money heavily at current low nickel and copper prices (my estimate is a loss of $0.5B to $1B per quarter). If they run out of cash, they must shut down the mining operations. It will send the palladium price to the moon when that happens.

To seize the opportunity, you can buy any physical palladium metal you can find. Better yet, buy shares of Stillwater Mining (SWC) and North American Palladium (PAL). These two are the only primary palladium producers in the world. You can also buy South African PGM mining companies, like Anglo Platinum (AAUK) and Impala Platinum (IMPUY.PK). Palladium metal can be bought from APMEX and PAMP or other precious metal dealers. I am trying to talk with SWC and PAL to see how they can help average folks to acquire physical palladium more easily for investment.

The FED has unleashed the nuclear option: US debts monetization. It means mass printing of money and inevitable collapse of the US dollar. It makes a compelling case for owning precious metals to safeguard your financial security: Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium. I will talk about outlook of US dollar and how to survive the hyper-inflation in the next articles.

Looking at the fundamentals of supply and demand, palladium beats other precious metals hands down. Again I want to caution people against buying Gold ETF (GLD) and Silver ETF (SLV), as I do not see convincing evidences that physical metals actually exist to back these two ETFs, and the silver bars serial number list contains lots of red flags to be trusted. If you like silver, you'd better owning physical silver or silver mining stocks like SSRI, PAAS, HL and CDE.

Some thought on what looming hyper-inflation would do to banks. I believe that NO BANK can survive the hyper-inflation, regardless of how sound their balance sheets look. The reason is simple: Why would any one leave money in a bank if the currency is losing value rapidly? All banks will fail if people are withdrawing cash en mass. But please do NOT rush to your bank to withdraw your cash tomorrow. I do NOT want to cause bank runs. You still have enough time to gradually and orderly withdraw money from your bank and put the money into precious metals and other valuable physical assets.

I am looking for short opportunities in all bank stocks. Jim Rogers said he was shorting JP Morgan (JPM), which looks to be a good choice. Some other bank names come to consider: Bank of America (BAC), Citibank (C), Wells Fargo (WFC), Bank of New York (BK). All banks ultimately will fail or be nationalized. There is absolutely no investment value in any bank. Bottom line: There can be NO healthy banking industry without a sound monetary system, just like no fish can live without water. But too many people have already shorted banking stocks. In light of the on-going short squeeze in financial stocks, it is better to wait patiently a little longer, before entering short positions in banking stocks at higher price levels.

Full Disclosure: The author is heavily invested in SWC and PAL, and shipping stocks like EXM, DRYS, EGLE, TBSI, GNK, NM. I own silver mining stocks SSRI, PAAS and HL. I do not currently have short positions in banks but am waiting for opportunity to short.

How to Save The US Economy Part Two

The global credit crunch has brought virtually all economic activities to a grinding halt, except for one which is booming: Piracy from Somali. But even the pirates, despite of their lucrative and booming business, can not get a loan from CitiBank (C) to expand their fleets. I predict the pirate business will collapse as there will be no more ships to hijack: With BDI Shipping Index dropped to 666 on 12/04/08, cape size ships (100K+ tons) are leased for only $2,345 a day, a 99% drop from $234,000 a day just 5 months ago. Ships are now better off laid at harbors than to fight the pirates. Is BDI = 666 a sign of Armageddon for the world?

I think there is big hope in global economy and there is little hope in the US economy. I actually started to aggressively buy shares of Dry Ships (DRYS) near its recent lows, around about $4. Many ironic things happen for reasons. During the WW II, non-Christian China extended helps to the European Jews escaping from Hitler by letting them come to Shanghai without a visa, while Christian western nations kept their doors shut. Today, the communist China which Jim Rogers called "the best capitalist in the world", is coming to the rescue of the world's capitalism, by doing the right things. Today the man with a Muslin middle name could save America!

China's aggressive plan to boost spending and stimulate domestic demands will save and revitalize the global economy. Based on its huge population basis, China's per capital consumption of many basic things are still far below even global averages and hence have a lot of rooms for growth. With 1/5 of global population, China consumes 1/12 of the world's oil, owns 1/28th of the world's passenger cars, Read "China Eats the World" to get a better picture what Chinese demand means for the world. China's relentless economic growth amid global resources depletion is the fundamental basis for a long period of commodities bull, regardless any temporary set backs. As China turn its economy from one which is export oriented to one that's domestic consumption oriented, the demand on global commodities will be stronger, not weaker. There is a good reason that well over half of China's overseas investments are in the mining sectors.

But the Americans people will have to wake up and do right things to save the US economy. We either succeed, or we will be marginalized and become irrelevant as the rest of the world moves forward, leaving America behind. I voted for Obama as I hope he is humble enough to listen to humble people like me instead of special interests. He needs a lot of helps to get his job done. I am willing to do what I can to help him, but only if he listens. Obama is calling all Americans to contribute ideas. I know exactly how to save America from an economic collapse so I am hoping that my ideas can make it into his ears in some way.

My first help to Obama is helping him with his difficulty in picking a proper inauguration gift for his wife. Obviously Obama must have thought about a rhodium ring, but then backed off the idea. I think he was smart to have considered rhodium, and wise to give it up.

There is no better indicator of the health of global economy than the commodities sector. As I discussed, rhodium was the brightest star in the commodity boom, haven raised from $300 to $10000 per ounce. But rhodium was also hit hardest, having fallen to $700-ish recently. The rhodium price swing is just too much change even for Obama, and it surely will raise public eyebrows that you purchased the perceived most luxurious precious metal during hard times.

Obama should buy Michelle an Iridium Ring. Iridium, just like rhodium, is a PGM metal. The noble metal iridium is just as rare and precious as rhodium, but it is much humble than rhodium. Iridium price never experienced the glory and then the collapse of rhodium. Out of all noble metals, iridium is the noblest one: Its melting point is 500 degrees higher than platinum; It's the most corruption (corrosion) resistant metal in nature, and extremely hard. The character of iridium is so precious and unique it is a perfect expression of an eternal bond and commitment, a perfect fit for a gift to our next First Lady. Iridium is the second densest element in nature and the most dense one is Obamium (oops, Osmium). Some say the densest is Bushcronium, an element that like they say in Texas, is all neutron and no proton. Unlike rhodium's freefall from glory, iridium is a phoenix raised from ashes.

So President-elect Obama, be sure to buy a custom made iridium ring for the first lady as it is a perfect symbol in defining your presidency and your character, and a daily reminder to yourself that American people deserve an Obamium that's different from Bushcronium.

The root of America's economic problem is we create too little and spend too much. We live beyond our means, which is unsustainable. We created one debt bubble after another to pop up the system and continue reckless spending and accumulation of debt, only to make it worse. We must head directly to the problem of over-spending and under-producing. The budget must be balanced, but it can NOT be done by tax hike or spending cut. The solution must be found outside conventional thinking. We need some revolutional thinking to solve the problem.

  1. Stop throwing trillions of dollars at financial institutions. They are blackholes and anything thrown at them makes the blackholes grow bigger. Soon the blackholes will be big enough to swallow America in one swoop. Let them fail! What's good of banks if they are not lending money out? I can lend my money to my neighbor without a bank's help!

  2. Get rid of the Federal Reserve System; get rid of IRS; get rid of personal and business income tax. This gets rid of the need for people to file annual income tax return. If there is no income tax to pay, then there can not be any tax fraud or tax evasion.

  3. Tax consumptions, NOT incomes or profits. The government provides public services and protections so people can go about their lives. If you are consuming more goods and services, you are likely also using more government services so you need to pay more tax.

The third point is the most important point: Tax on consumptions, not on incomes or business profits. Is this unfair that billionaires like Warren Buffet who lives a modest life could end up paying little tax compare to his fortune? Not at all! If a billionaire spends his fortune on luxuries, he will surely pay the consumption tax for it. But if he re-invests his fortune to expand business and create more jobs and do all kind of good things to the economy, and at the end of day he donates the bulk of his fortune to charities that promote the well being of the society, why should he pay more tax beyond what he pays for his own personal consumption?

California's current budget woe is a good example why it's bad idea to tax on business and personal incomes. During bad economic times, when the government desperately needs to spend more money, the tax revenues dry up, as individuals lose jobs and businesses are not making profits, hence paying no tax. The government then has to tax the remaining profitable businesses even harder, driving them out of business as well, or driving them out of state. Likewise, on the national level, businesses are moving operations to overseas and bring away jobs with them. Rich people migrate to foreign countries and even denounce their US citizenship. Capitals are flowing out; cheap foreign goods are flowing in. The whole reason of the downfall of the country is the irrational tax and spending system.

President Obama's job No. 1 is to bring America's Most Famous Fugitive back home! Not the terrorist, but a true patriot and believer of free market capitalism, named Jim Rogers, he openly confessed to have sold almost all of his US assets and dollars, sold his house, sold all furniture: sofa, bed, tables and chairs, and moved to Singapore. He is a billionaire refugee as he sees no hope left for the country. Send Air Force One to bring him home! Offer him a good job and he might be helpful to salvage America. Likewise, use people like Peter Schiff and Karl Denninger. They have good ideas what's wrong and how to fix things.

Why Jim Rogers would call China the "Best Capitalist in the World" is quite striking. Thirty years ago China was a completely different world. In 1978, China was on the brink of catastrophic social, economic and political collapse, after ten years chaos of the Cultural Revolution destroyed the country's remaining economic infrastructures. To Americans today it may sounds like an ideal society: "bankruptcy" and "unemployment" were phrases never heard about as they simply did not exist in a socialist system. Are we going in the direction of socialism if we now bail out every one and no failure is allowed?

Deng Xiao-Ping changed China and the world forever. He visited America to learn how free market capitalism works and why is it successful. He adopted Dr. T.D. Lee's suggestion and started a series programs to send Chinese students to study in America, including the CUSPEA which I personally benefited from. More importantly, he started some experimental special economic zones to invite overseas investors to come and open businesses, promising full support of the government in all means possible, relaxed labor laws, prohibition of labor unions, and not a penny of the business profit shall be taxed. The only tax is a low, symbolic land usage tax. It was quite controversy at the time, because how could any communist allow a capitalist come and open a sweatshop to rip off local workers, and get off with the profits and not paying a penny? But it worked; capitals flowed in, first in trickle and eventually like flood. China's economy prospered. The rest is history.

Exactly thirty years later, President Obama needs to pay a return visit to China and learn how the Chinese succeeded in the economic reform and how America can benefit from it. Things can be turned around quickly; stop taxing any business profits, then capitals from all over the world will flood into America and open business here and create jobs at home. When Americans have good jobs and they don't need to pay income tax, they will have more money to spend and create more consumption tax for the government. Wouldn't it be wonderful?

In light of current economic crisis, I am hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. So my investment strategy reflects both possible outcomes. I am hoping that somehow my humble words can make its way to some one close to Obama, and somehow indeed he is persuaded to buy an iridium ring for the first lady, and some how the iridium metal will get him interested in the rest of the noble metal family, particularly palladium. Mr. Obama needs to know that America is blessed with a world unique palladium mine in Montana: Stillwater Mining (SWC), and that palladium enable cold fusion, a physics discovery which is being suppressed by the establishment science camps, but which could bring to the world virtually inexhaustible cheap new energy source. He needs to take cold fusion seriously, as it is the best solution to the looming global energy crisis and bring about long lasting global peace.

Short of a quick cold fusion break through, America needs to rely on its own natural resources. We have a tremendous amount of coal. But vehicles burn oil, not coal. There is a chemical process that turns coal into synthetic fuel; it needs cobalt, which is in the same family as rhodium and iridium! Iridium's little sister is rhodium; rhodium's little sister is cobalt. I hope any day Obama sees his iridium ring, he thinks about cobalt and how it can contribute to America's energy future. We need biofuel. But we first need lots of fertilizer to grow biofuel efficiently. We need platinum, palladium, rhodium in making chemical fertilizers. All these metals are critically important to a nation's survival and prosperity, both during peace time and during war times.

On the night that the auto bailout failed in the Congress, let's pray for America's tomorrow. Let's hope that Obama is truly a leader who can listen to the people and can bring about change in Washington as well as change in Wall Street. GM might only have days if not hours to live as market confidence in its survival has now been lost. Let's hope President Bush can do one last thing right before he goes home: Use executive power to bail out GM immediately. Meanwhile Obama should promise Bush that he will be pardoned if he exceeded his legal authority in directly bailing out GM, as it is in the national interest to protect millions of jobs. Stop the bipartisan finger pointing already. We have only one America and one future for our children.

Full Disclosure: The author is heavily invested in SWC and PAL, two palladium mining companies, in OMG, a cobalt chemical company, and in DRYS, a dry bulk shipping company. I have no GM position either way.

Investing In a Resource Constrained World Part Three

Wow! What a turbulent marketplace lately! I took some hits lately in my holdings of PAL and SWC, my favorite precious metal palladium mining stocks. But nothing compares with the shocking collapse of BSC, which falls from $60+ to only $2 a share bought by JPM, in just two days. I have sympathy in people who lost big money in BSC. Maybe LEH is next victim? Maybe WM? CitiBank? Maybe even the invincible MER and GS could also fall. There is so much panic and chaos in the financial market.

Recently, Gene Epstein published a cover story on Barrons declaring a commodity bubble is bursting. Has commodity topped? Do we see a commodity bubble bursting? I must point out that Mr. Epstein is completely wrong! I am NOT disputing any of the numbers or facts he cited, but he completely mis-interpreted the facts, and even reversed some causual relationships.

Prices of commodity is determined by the supply/demand balance. If supply exceeds demand, price goes down, but if demand exceeds supply, price goes up. When there is a shortage, the price will keep moving up until eventually the supply/demand reaches equilibrium again, often times due to higher price stimulates increased supply and supresses demand. But there could also be cases where higher price actually stimulate demand and supresses supply!!! I will talk about that later. Depending on how price elastic or inelastic the supply and demand is, equilibrium price could be achieved quickly, or the price could be pushed to an extremely high levels, like rhodium. Price appreciation alone does NOT tell you whether something is over-priced or under-priced, supply and demand data does. Please repeat the previous sentence one more time.

Unfortunately, in his long article, Mr. Epstein meantioned not a single word, and cited not a single number regarding the supply/demand relationship. What audacity allowed him to claim there is a bubble, when he can't even tell us how many barrels of oil the world produces a day and how many barrels it needs! All he ever did was showing us some price data. Now repeat my previous highlighted sentence one more time.

Mr. Epstein talked about speculative hot money chasing a relatively narrow commodity market, and he believed that's the reason we currently have a commodity bubble and it is bursting. He got the causual relationship completely reversed! The commodity bull market is NOT caused by investments by speculators. It's the opposite, the commodity bull is the reason that attracts investors to put their money in it. Anything that is bullish or hot of course naturally attracts investor money and speculators. If that alone makes it a bubble, then a lot of things are bubble: You buy bonds and the bond market must be a bubble, you deposit your money in a bank and it must be a bubble. You go to Wal-Mart shopping and Wal-Mart must be a bubble, too. Actually Wal-Mart must be the largest economical bubble to be popped imminently, judged by how every one visits Wal-Mart daily and spend their money there. How ridiculous!

Can there be a commodity bubble? Of course. Can speculative investments cause a commodity bubble? Of course. A bubble is formed when the price is high enough to correct the natural demand/supply imbalance, but artificial demand by speculative bidders keep pushing price much higher from the level supply/demand already balanced. We are far from even reach the supply/demand equilibrium yet for any of the commodities, let alone form a bubble yet.

But Mr. Epstein did get one thing right, that is, even though only a very small number of funds are chasing the commodity market, the amount of money involved is already a huge amount comparing with the size of the commodity market. That is absolutely right. But it is NOT the reason we have a commodity bubble here. Instead it is the reason for the extreme volatility we see in the market place. We see silver price jumps up and down 2 dollars a day, an un-precedent volatility. That's exactly because too much speculative money is chasing too narrow a physical silver market. Try to squeeze 100 people into a 25 square feet room. They MUST fight fiercely. When a huge amount of money is concentrated in a narrow market, exceptional volatility must be the result, but it doesn't change the fundamentals, volatility will wash out some of the speculators, which is one way the system achieves some sort of balance.

So what does the supply and demand fundamentals say about current commodity market? Two things decide that commodity shortage will be a long term phenomena. First, governments of the world are printing exponentially increasing amount of fiat currency to flood the market. Fiat money is one thing that is definitely NOT in short supply. Their purchasing power are dropping rapidly nowaday. When purchasing power of fiat money drops, instead of supressing demand on commodities, it actually stimulates stronger demand. For money discussions I urge you to visit Gold Is Money and JSMINESET.

Here is an example. I learned last week the price of rice is going up rapidly in international market. Does the higher price make me pause to think about how I should eat less rice? No! I rushed to the nearest COSTCO and picked up TEN bags of the 50 pounds rice, at a price which is still cheap, I used up all the cash in my wallet, or I would have bought more. I am concerned that when the news of rice shortage spreads, there will be panic buying and the shelves will be empty in no time. I do not intend to cause a panic, and I am not speculating on rice to make profit. I am just hoarding some for my own consumption. But here is a good example raising price actually stimulates my purchase demand. Not only higher price stimulates demand, it also supresses supply. Vietnam, India, Cambodia all decided to cut back or totally shut down their rice export, reducing supply to the international market. Is this a bubble? No, there is a real global shortage.

China has too much of US dollars in its foreign exchange reserve, but not enough of anything else. It doesn't have a significant strategic oil reserve. It doesn't have any strategic base and precious metal reserve of any significant size. If the import oil is interrupted, China could be crippled in less than 15 days. If there is a major conflict in the future, China could not last more than a few months if its outside source of metals, and other critical commodities were cut off. China desperately needs to spend out its huge reserve of dollars before it becomes worthless, and stock up some strategic reserves of any thing and every thing that it could buy. And who is to say Japan, Korea, India, Brazil is not on the same boat? Facing an uncertainty future of a crisis looming world, every nation on earth desperately needs to hoard up something and everything to secure its own future. And individual persons are doing the same hoarding and preparation, too. This factor alone will mean we will have a very very long commodity bull cycle.

The second thing that decides that we will have a long commodity bull cycle is the fact we live in a resource constrained world. The earth has a limited size, with limited natural resource on its accessible surface. Have you heard about Peak Oil? King Bubbert's Curve? It's a flawless mathematical derivative that says when a limited, non-renewable natural resource is being produced, the annual production rate reaches a peak when about half of the resource is depleted, production enters a permanent declining phase once we go past the half depletion peak, regardless any technology progress or improved efforts to produce more.

I believe the current commodity boom cycle is different from all previous ones. Previous commodity bull cycles are just a part of economic natural cycles of boom and burst. But for the first time in history, the current commodity boom cycle is closely related to the peaking and depletion of many critical natural resources we have become addicted to. That includes oil, natural gas, coal, precious metals and base metals. We have only 9 years worth of proven reserve of natural gas, the global oil production has just peaked, global silver production has long peaked and only have 13 years worth of production left. Copper has probably peaked already and there is 27 years left. (Check out these natural resource stocks: NGAS, CHK, SWN, JRCC, PCU, FCX, TGB, PAAS, CDE, SSRI, MGN, just to name a few)

Once a none-renewable natural resource has peaked, the annual production enters a permanent ever declining phase, despite of best effort of technology to boost production. So supply will be limited and will be ever declining. Higher price will have virtually no effect in boosting supply. Therefore there is only one way left to bring equilibrium back: supression of demand, otherwise known as demand destruction.

Has commodity cycle peaked? The answer is in whether the supply/demand has be brought back into equilibrium? The answer to the later question is has demand destruction occured? I do not see demand destruction occured in any thing yet at all.

Demand destruction in food items would be massive occurance of famine and mal-nutrition globally; Demand destruction in oil would be that people give up their SUVs and ride a bike 20 miles to go to work every day; Demand destruction in copper, zinc and steel would be we see the Fed issuing plastic pennies, and auto makers promote plastic light body vehicles; Demand destruction in platinum and palladium would be that people get married with a plain silver engagement rings, with no diamond; Demand destruction in tellurium would be FSLR shut business down. I do not see any of the demand destruction happen yet. People complain about higher prices but they just pay more to get the same thing.

On engagement rings, I believe true love does NOT take a compromise. Read this story:

For some people, however, no compromise is acceptable. Take Noah Cuttler, 29, of the District. He met his true love, ... about a year and a half ago ... and Cuttler decided two months ago he was ready to pop the question. ...

He knew platinum was the metal of choice, ... Finally, he pulled out his credit card and charged $1,000 for a platinum band from his dealer and several thousand dollars more for a 1.3-carat diamond. He plans to propose after she reads this article.

". . . it's supposed to be for a lifetime," he said.

Mr. Cuttler must have proposed to his love by now and I wish the best outcome for this couple. He is surely not the only one who falls in love. Across the ocean, millions of young Chinese couples have planned to get married in China's Wedding Year 2008, a year with special significance to the Chinese, not only because the number 2008 starts with a 2, meaning "The couple" or "both of us" and ends with a lucky number 8, signifying "fortune", and the year 2008 is the Gold Ox year in Chinese zodiac, but also because it's the year of Olympics in China, which is scheduled to start on 8/8/2008, triple fortune, I guess. Estimates in China are that 2 or 3 times more people will get married in 2008 than an average year. My estimate is there will be 35 million or more weddings held, about 5% of the population or more.

Getting married is a commitment of lifetime and the Chinese do NOT take any compromise. A platinum diamond ring is a must have in a wedding preparation nowadays, among other things. People with less affordability may settle for a palladium diamond ring, but will not compromise for anything less. A typical Chinese couple would pour resources from parents and friends, on top of their lifetime savings, just to make a lavish wedding happen, because they are judged by people on how lavish a wedding they could afford to carry out. A compromise on a platinum or palladium diamond ring is just unthinkable due to the social peer pressure.

If only half of the 35 million newly wed Chinese couples buy a platinum or paladium diamond wedding band, each containing half ounce of the metals, that would be a demand of 9 million ounces just in the Chinese jewelry sector. The whole world produces only 7 million ounces of each of the two PGM metals a year from mines. The prices of PGM metals have got to shot through the roof.

Thus I encourage people to take advantage of recent price dip, and buy stocks of the only two primary palladium mining companies in the world, PAL and SWC. I have explained the two earth shattering events in the PGM metals market. The fundamentals have not changed a bit at all. South Africa is now on mandatory electric power rolling blackouts and it is entering the winter season, which makes matter worse. The Russia stockpile sale still has not shown up in the Custom of Switzerland. The recent downfall of the PGM metals, which coincidented with the knock down of gold and silver, is nothing but inherit volatility when too many speculators jumped on board. Once the excessive is shaken out, which I think is about finished by now, the PGM metals should continue the rally up in no time.

P.S. The author owns stocks of PAL and SWC, and hoards physical tellurium, gold and silver.
